Cannon Dual Fuel Cooker - Door fix

The main oven door requires too much force to open the door and to shut it. If you use the handle to open the door you can actually break it. This has happened to me and someone else I know.

I found that to avoid the problem, the door was being opened by pulling on the top right corner. But this could lead to an even greater problem as this would be the perfect place to deflect the door in order to break the glass

I bought a new handle and roller catch, after the handle eventually became cracked. On fitting the new catch I found that the door was just as hard to open. I had thought that the wear in the unit causing the rollers to not be held firmly in position might have contributed to the problem, but no.

I came to the conclusion that there was a design fault. While it is important that the door cannot open accidently, or easily be opened by a toddler, and also that the door should compress the seal keeping the heat in, it also should not be too hard to open.

The solution is to modify the catch. I removed the bottom roller. When shut, the weight of the door is supported by the top roller resting on the pin protruding from the main oven surround. The door now continues to be held firmly shut but opens easily.

Removing the bottom roller can simply achieved by inserting a screwdriver between the two rollers, thus compressing the springs. Grasp the tab belonging to the bottom roller assembly, that now protrudes from the body of the assembly with a pair of pliers. A small pair of molegrips is ideal for this. Remove the screwdriver that is keeping the spring compressed. The roller and its pin-like axle can now be moved away from the spring to a position where the pin can now be withdrawn. When this is done the roller and the tab complete with spring can now be withdrawn.

Replace the roller catch and rejoice!
